Another scary moment for "family reunification"

The case of Jakadrien Turner, a 15-year-old US citizen deported to Colombia after a shoplifting arrest, is certainly horrifying, but it seems to me that this piece on Democracy Now misses a key point – by focusing on the argument that US citizens (or veterans) shouldn’t be deported to foreign countries, and making the argument for family reunification in the case of Turner, the fact that this teenager ran away from home, and even perhaps chose to be deported rather than returning to her birth family, gets lost in the picture. While it now seems that she will go back to her birth family, is this just another tragedy piled onto the whole hideous ordeal?

Ugh. How deadly and deceptive this word "family," can be.
